...whenever I'm talking to young women about politics, I always say: "Look. You don't have to run for office. You don't even have to be actively involved. But you do have to exercise your brain in deciding what you believe and whom you will support." And sometimes it is choices between people, none of whom excite you, but studied enough to figure out, OK, if I vote for this person over that person, I'm more likely to see progress on something I care about.

-Hillary Rodham Clinton

Recent events have inspired us to create a short series of interactive talks about various aspects of civics (the study of the rights and duties of citizenship). If you've been looking for a welcoming and non-judgemental place to improve your understanding of what's at stake the current political landscape- this series is for you.

How To: The Civics Series

Monday, March 20th, 6:30 to 8pm: Introduction to the Constitution
What does the constitution cover, what does it do, how is it different from the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence?
How does it help us to be familiar with what the constitution does and doesn't do/mean?

Monday, April 3rd, 6:30 to 8pm: What (the f*ck) is an Executive Order?
History of how the executive order came into being? How it was controlled? How it's use has been expanding? Can we do anything about it? Should we?

Monday, April 24th, 6:30 to 8pm: How the Three Branches of Government Work?
Who does what? How do they interface? Why was it designed this way? What's happening now? Why does it seem like things happen both totally too fast and unbelievable slowly?

Monday, May 8th, 6:30 to 8pm: How to Participate (civic engagement 101)
Educating yourself- sound sources, aligning with groups that share you values (identifying your values)
Calls/letters/emails/in-person appointments- what works, what has the most impact, what clogs the system?
Protests- what makes them effective?
Volunteering- where are people needed?
How to cultivate reasonable expectations while persistently pushing the envelope?

Mondays, March 20th, April 3rd, April 24th, May 8th, 6:30 to 8pm: I Need All the Help I Can Get, Sign Me Up for the Entire Series
